How to properly prepare lyophilized peptides for injection

What You Need

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water)

Contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as preservative — extends shelf life of reconstituted peptide

Insulin Syringes (U-100)

1 mL syringes with 28–31 gauge needles for subcutaneous injection

Alcohol Swabs

For sterilizing vial tops and injection sites

Sharps Container

For safe disposal of used needles

How to Reconstitute Peptides: Step by Step

  1. Step 1

    Gather supplies

Collect your peptide vial, BAC water, insulin syringe, and alcohol swabs. Work on a clean surface.

  2. Step 2

    Sterilize vial tops

Wipe the rubber stopper of both the peptide vial and BAC water vial with an alcohol swab. Allow to air dry.

  3. Step 3

    Draw BAC water

Insert the syringe into the BAC water vial and draw the desired volume (typically 1–2 mL per vial).

  4. Step 4

    Add water slowly

Insert the syringe into the peptide vial. Aim the water at the glass wall, not directly at the powder. Do NOT shake.

  5. Step 5

    Gently swirl

Gently swirl the vial in a circular motion until the powder is fully dissolved. The solution should be clear.

  6. Step 6

    Label and store

Label the vial with the date of reconstitution and concentration. Store in the refrigerator (2–8°C).

Storage & Handling

Maintaining peptide potency through proper storage

Lyophilized (Dry Powder)

  • Room temperature: up to 3 months (most peptides)
  • Refrigerated (2–8°C): up to 2 years
  • Frozen (-20°C): indefinite (avoid repeated freeze-thaw)
  • Keep away from light and moisture
  • Do not expose to heat above 37°C

Reconstituted Solution

  • Refrigerate immediately after reconstitution
  • Most peptides: use within 30 days
  • GHK-Cu: use within 14 days (copper degrades faster)
  • Thymosin Alpha-1: use within 24 hours
  • Never freeze reconstituted peptides

Handling Best Practices

  • Always use sterile technique
  • Inspect for cloudiness or particulates before use
  • Discard if solution appears discolored
  • Label with reconstitution date and concentration
  • Transport in insulated bag with ice packs

Safety Guidelines

Essential safety considerations for peptide research protocols

Before Starting Any Protocol

  • Consult a licensed healthcare provider
  • Review all contraindications for each peptide
  • Obtain baseline bloodwork (hormones, metabolic panel)
  • Start with the lowest effective dose
  • Source from reputable, tested suppliers
  • Verify peptide purity with Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
  • Understand the regulatory status in your jurisdiction
  • Have a plan for managing adverse reactions

Absolute Contraindications

  • Label and store

Most peptides can stimulate growth pathways

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Insufficient safety data for any peptide

  • Personal/family history of MTC

Contraindicated for GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide)

  • MEN2 syndrome

    Contraindicated for GLP-1 agonists

  • Wilson's disease

    Contraindicated for GHK-Cu (copper peptide)

  • Organ transplant recipients

Immunomodulatory peptides may affect rejection risk

Monitoring Parameters

  • IGF-1

    Baseline + every 3 months — For GH-stimulating peptides

  • Fasting glucose / HbA1c

Baseline + every 3 months — For metabolic peptides

  • Comprehensive metabolic panel

Baseline + every 6 months — General safety monitoring

  • Lipid panel

Baseline + every 6 months — GLP-1 agonists affect lipids

  • Thyroid function (TSH)

Baseline — Hypothyroidism reduces GH response

Injection Technique

Subcutaneous (SC)

Pinch skin at abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Insert needle at 45° angle. Release skin before injecting. Most peptides use this route.

Intramuscular (IM)

Inject into the deltoid, vastus lateralis, or ventrogluteal muscle. Insert at 90° angle. Aspirate before injecting (optional).

Intranasal

For Selank and Semax. Tilt head back slightly. Insert tip into nostril. Spray while inhaling gently through nose.

Dosing Calculations

Quick reference for calculating injection volumes

The Formula

Volume to inject (mL) =

Desired Dose (mcg) ÷ Concentration (mcg/mL)

Example: BPC-157

Vial: 5 mg + 2 mL BAC water

Concentration: 2500 mcg/mL

Desired dose: 500 mcg

Volume = 500 ÷ 2500 = 0.2 mL (20 units)

Example: Ipamorelin

Vial: 2 mg + 2 mL BAC water

Concentration: 1000 mcg/mL

Desired dose: 300 mcg

Volume = 300 ÷ 1000 = 0.3 mL (30 units)
